This is a thank you and a note to let you know the status of BLACKBERRY: a magazine.
First, I want to thank you for taking the time to share your work with us. As a writer myself, I understand the courage, time, and effort that goes into selecting publications you admire and submitting your work to them. I'm always honored by the quality and quantity of writing and art we receive and I'm very grateful for it.
Second, thank you to our readers and past donors who share and support not just the magazine, but all of the voices behind it.
This year began with high hopes of what could happen with BLACKBERRY: a magazine; I was surprised by the requests and interests we received not only from writers and readers, but from indie book stores and universities as well. I worked hard to try to build resources for the magazine while also operating it as smoothly as possible with a steadily decreasing budget and it just wasn't happening. And as a mom of three young children who is also trying to build her own freelance career (so that I can help fund the magazine), there just was and is not enough time to do it all and to do it well. Over the past year and a half, I failed to meet my own standards for BLACKBERRY: a magazine and I didn't think it was fair to our writers or our readers.
So the new plan is to take a break and rebuild, hopefully with a little seed money to help us pay contributors, and to continue to find ways to get the literature written by black women into as many hands as possible.
The website will continue to operate as usual, but we are closed to submissions and therefore there will be no new content added until some date to be determined in the future. Back issues will still be available in print and digital editions. Those who entered the contest will be receiving refunds for the submission fee via Submittable over the next few days.
Again, thank you so much for your support and belief in the importance of what this magazine hopes to accomplish in the publishing world. We will be in touch. We will be back.
